Not that I'm aware of besides the method you're using. I'd try to control Gullit, Vieira, or Ramos, they're likely not all in wall and good defending stats and will likely not lose a header or strength battle. I believe it's because the TOTS and fof cards aren't in packs anymore and have gone up in price ever since they haven't. So the cheapest solutions are probably all high rated golds now.

My advice is to buy/keep the players for both options. And then for at least 15 games, play your first half with the 4-5-1 and switch to the 3412 at half to close the game out. You will likely really see/learn to play with the 4-5-1 formation better and decide from there who to keep/sell going forward.

This. Only disadvantage is sometimes you need that break to rest, drink, regather yourself. And I liked the trademark celebrations of each player to add to the realism, but overall it's a net positive because of the people who wanted to try to be annoying.
