I made a small statistic about the last FIFA releases and their ratings. The following graph is only based on reviews from metacritic.com.

The following graph shows:
  • Meta scores (such as official game magazine review) shown per platform in orange colors. Scale is from 0 to 100 (Y axis on the left)
  • User Scores shown per platform in blue colors. Scale is from 0 to 10 (Y axis on the right)

x1sQ0zl.png
(check this link for full resolution)

The interesting observations are:
  1. Starting from FIFA 12, the meta scores and user scores differs.
  2. The meta scores are (more or less) stable since more than a decade.
  3. The User Score is dramatically declining since FIFA 11. The only exception is FIFA 17.
  4. The user Score ratings for FIFA 20 are devastating!

Personally, I think FIFA 20 is better than 19. But looks like there are quite some unhappy people out there? What is your opinion on that one? Is FIFA 20 really that bad?

Broken career mode will do that, along with the changes in defending which some people haven't or don't want to get to grips with equals this. Other than the issues like that, I'd say that FIFA 20 is perhaps one of the better received FIFA's in recent times.

FIFA can be quite a buggy game, but this time around it's like they've brought in better gameplay (& Volta) but just neglected every other aspect of the game, certainly seems the buggiest release I can remember.

Well, apparently the CMs (both manager and player) are unplayable. The bugs just are too big and nasty. Moreover, after having promised to fix some of the earlier problems, EA has failed to deliver. So no wonder people are disappointed.

I should add I haven’t bought the game. Waiting for it to be fixed.

User reviews can be taken with an extreme pinch of salt, much like giving an app a 1 star review because it doesn't do what you want it to.

imo EA has made the AI defending "dumb" so to speak. i understand they want defending to be more of the player's responsibility, which is the right thing, but having my AI players continuously do dumb things is ludicrous. such as my CB will leave his proper postition on his own and as a result leave a gaping hole in my defense which the opposition exploits over and over. i cant control every player on the field at the same time and this is unacceptable.

True, you have a point here. But if the average score is 1.1 out of 10 by considering 1379 Ratings, it's still devastating...

Ratings like that are easily gamed, happens on Rotten Tomatoes all the time

+ a general tiredness from EA as a whole. I guess after so many years of let downs.. the frustration is reflected in those ratings...

Lol First off don't even bother taking USER reviews seriously - the 0s and 1s scores - ever! They're likely just trolls, I mean idiots easily give a 1 star rating on a game on Amazon because of late delivery.

Now with reviewers, it's always hard for them to rate yearly games due to tiredness of the "same ol same ol". These reviewers sometimes have a lot of games on their plate, reviewing games like FIFA seems like a chore. I think they should just maintain the same score for a few years. Plus, we now have games being significantly marked down due to microtransactions. And then there's the whole EA being the boogeyman and it's just nice to mark their games down.

And scores have been reducing on almost EVERY game on Metacritic over the years, from COD to Far Cry to AC to NBA2K, compare those too. So overall you can't take reviews for yearly games especially FIFA seriously.

Actually when you compare, it makes it look even worse from what I have seen.

So just like EA, ignore the sane users and the glaringly obvious issues such as career mode.

So instead of taking user reviews, take the word of the paid critics? The ones that can be influenced... or the flat out made up ratings that EA says belong to a magazine or site, but you can not find that rating on that site, anywhere.

People who complain are more vocal anyway. People who aren't little whiny ❤️❤️❤️❤️ wont leave a review that easily.

At this point it's not even about being vocal. The vocal aspect comes from EA's lack of communication to things that are terribly wrong with the game. A game released with so many bugs one just cant justify. It doesnt take a novice more than a day to write an essay on things that either do not work or has issues. My 24 hour period after purchasing the game, my offline tournament crashed...had to redownload game, the famous career mode issue, couldn't create my pro passed a certain height, unable to loan any of my career mode players (How difficult is that to fix...I mean it's been years now)...crap like that is not moaning. Paid 60 for a series that's been releasing patches beyond patches and game still has issues. Cant keep getting jerked in life and say "hey, I'm going to make the best out of it"....❤️❤️❤️❤️ that.

FIFA 15, 16, 18 and 19 were the worst. I would put FIFA 20 above all the other FIFAs right now.

FIFA 15 was almost perfect, however the Usain Bolt pace killed it since it promoted throughball spam, if it was slower paced it would've been one of the top releases.

People that love the game as vocal as well and many people have never even viewed this board, but have tried to submit bugs and other issues on the Answers Board, if you visit it at all.

People that just be quiet if they are not exactly happy and continually take the scraps they are given might be why things do not improve quicker or in some cases at all. I get not complaining to the waiter about your food for fear of what the chef might do to your food, but this is not food... it is supposed to be a viable product that is fully functional out the door. They used to be able to make that happen, but with the increased internet capability they can be lazy not not have it even 85% done when they release it. EA builds this into their development time in the hopes of having a fixed game by Christmas buying season.

But there are many of those who have issues with the game but continue to buy the franchise... and EA loves that. They know that they can provide a poor product, make some improvements here and there through the year and people will keep buying.

If more people would wake up and not put up with this, EA would have to improve...

But sadly, too many sheep will keep up being sheep. But if enough people are vocal, many of the wall flowers may finally speak up as well...which I think is happening to an extent now. At least more so than in previous years.

We could argue that the popularity (or contant/talks) of FIFA series is decreasing since the last 5 years...

I wouldnt be suprised if PES is the nr1 soccer game in 2 years. Its easy for PES, just listen to the clients and make them love the game and every one will buy it. Im already done with Fifa to be honest.

PES is terrible. I tried PES instead of FIFA this year. It was a real disaster. Went back to FIFA and like it this year much more than previous year.

FIFA20 is completely unplayable. Annoying, with this game EASPORTS made a 10 years step back
I regret to have bought it.

    FIFA19 is a lot better.

Maybe this frostbite crap has something to do with it. I just think fifa needs to regroup. Skip a year and start fresh. Ofcourse that would never happen.

It is not terrible, it is just different. Gameplay, definitely feels like you are in control of the play much more than with FIFA. The feel is more realistic.

Graphics are not as good, content is lacking due to licenses, but many things are better in PES. Just as many things are better in FIFA.

Combine the two and it might for once be an extremely solid game.

Fifa 20's terrible defending system has me with no desire to play it. also, you mentioned something that i despise in every Fifa game. much of the time you feel like the result is out of your hands. you completely dominate your opponent and still get no result! if PES gives you much more control over the outcome of the game then im definitely for that! im buying PES tomorrow and it may be the start of a beautiful relationship.

I dont mind 20 to be fair, its good, not bad, not great, just good.

However, I highly doubt I will be buying 21 and this is from someone who has had the last 14 versions at release, I dont even blame EA or the game, the community is just damn awful, the game will never be great online as too many people resort to b.s tactics to win at all costs.

Fifa needs to go back to bare bones with tactics unfortunately.
