old gen is a cake walk . try a playoff round .... I suggest after qualifying head back to new gen... you won't improve your game play on old gen... New gen you actually become a much better defender .

This will be a good experiment. How do I play old gen version? Do I just download it

It's the other way round pal.
On next gen the game literally defends for you due to auto drop back and overload ballside so you might become a better attacker if you stick to it.
On old gen it's way more difficult to defend yourself. There is more space in behind, there is more space in your 3rd, players are turning quicker and so on.

This, old gen is less frustrating overall because you get less games where your battering someone yet the scoreline is still close.

Played both and constantly flicker between the two and New Gen gets you out of trouble due to the auto drop back, Old Gen if you make a mistake its 9/10 a goal as the GK's dont save a thing.
As for the original question, the skill level is obviously going to vary and you cant really say which is easier as it all depends on who you're playing.
Old Gen just has a larger player base so a bit more variety in opponents.
No difference, in old gen its easier to score and concede a goal. Also on the New Gen average Joe has better team than Old gen. Most players in Elite already has Neymar/Mbappe/Messi/cr7 and other expensive cards. I think thats why most people say old gen is easier because there are still a lot of players who plays 200k team, whereas on New Gen every team you face has average 1 mil value.
who would come out on top if you had 2 people of exactly the same skill level, one on ps4 and one on ps5 and pitted them against each other in a two legged tie (one game on ps4 and one on ps5).

Probably 1-1..?
The games in my opinion are very different, obviously its still Fifa 22 so you can move between the two and not be out your depth but they both play completely different in my opinion.
Formation guides, tactics guides, player reviews; they should all have a flair which tells you which generation they are talking about.
CB's on New Gen can be slower, strikers dont need to be as pacey, you can just use different players due to the way the games play out.
GK's are also pathetic on Old Gen compared to New Gen, so shooting also matters.
Its all about what game/generation you prefer and are comfortable with, theres no point looking for the easier version, I suppose I won more on Old Gen but I prefer New Gen, the difference in win ratio isnt that important as I'm not aiming to be a world beater.
New gen vs old gen the biggest difference is the player base numbers. There are far many awful players who still have a PS4. Most ps5 players are either seasoned veterans because they are old, or cracked out g fuel snorting youngsters trying to be pros.
I’ve noticed there isn’t many casual players except me on the new gen console, but I was lucky to order one when they first came out

it's the opposite... on next gen the CPU defend for you
but on old gen there are non pro-player who need to play on next-gen to qualify for tournament
