What's so wrong with Cole?
I've been looking at the options for icon swaps, and Cole looks an excellent choice.
There wasn't much love for him initially, but now that the "hate on EA no matter what" reflex is out the way, how do people feel about him?

If not Cole who is a better lb without breaking the bank?
Robertson is the best lb in the game IMO aside from Carlos and zam.
Well, Mendy has a unique body type which elevates a player above his stats.
Also, its whether you put an importance on key defensive stats. Technically Cashley should be a million times better at positioning himself than Mendy but in my experience these stats are all very trivial. I personally am always manually moving my defenders where possible so there's not a huge amount of time where these defensive stats can actually make the difference if you don't defend alot like me. I'm usually camped in my opponents half trying to score a goal and get done on the counter attack so fast defenders are more important than those with high defensive stats.
I use a 352 and am contemplating getting Cashley to play at LCB. He looks like he'd be fantastic there.

Still undecided but Cole is an improvement to Mendy and makes Rooney easier to link.
