Interested to see what the consensus is in here.

You’re the FA - it’s Saturday night and England have just lost to France. Do you stick with Southgate or begin the hunt for his successor?

If you’re making a change, who’s your top target?

No shame to losing to France, they're the previous winners and have some of the best talent in the world. If you don't win against them ,then he probably deserves the sack as this is a very good England side. Probably 5-6 players will not be playing at their current level in 2026, so you'll need someone who can build around the upcoming young English talent. I doubt Kane will be the main man in 2026, and SG has already managed England through two WC's so a fresh face isn't a bad idea.

Looking at the ages and how you can predict some players will decline, most of the defense plus Kane, Sterling and Wilson will have to be replaced by 2026. Some might be in the squad still but they won’t be as important as they are now.

If a new manager is out there who is better, after this WC is the time to bring them in and let them start refreshing the squad. 2 WCs plus the Euros and Nations League is enough for one international manager.

Southgate out awfully quiet right now. Will be loud once we lose to France though.

Been away boys what’s the crack

Do you expect people to be complaining after a 3-0 win and a good performance. The way we play against France will obviously change peoples minds. If we just sit off the entire game dont counter attack and deservedly lose then I will happily be saying Southgate out again. Losing to France isnt an issue they are a great team if I see us play with fear again then I will say Southgate out.

Well that’s the issue is that you can’t just be flakey after every performance if we do well you don’t complain and if we don’t you do. Be consistent. The guys only lost two tournament games and those were against good teams in late stages. We had one draw against a decent US team in the group stage and everyone was on his back

It's not being flaky looking at the bigger picture. I think we have played well for the most part in this tournament. If we show we haven't learnt anything when we play France what's the point. This doesn't mean win the game it means don't lose the exact same way we have been. If we don't i think it's perfectly reasonable to be unhappy.

So what happens if we attack France/play like we have been playing and get smashed 3-0 as a result?

100% we will get people saying that we should have played a more conservative way to maximise our chances of progressing to the next round and that Southgate was naive to think we could win by playing good football.

Realistically speaking, our best hope of progression is to Mourinho the game. That doesn’t guarantee it will work, but it certainly improves our chances.

Have a threat on the counter its not 100% attack or 100% defend. I want to see a balance we have severely lacked that against better teams in the past. We have to pick moments when we are on top in the game to try and have some spells of pressure. I don't want us to play like atletico madrid that's my point.

Perisic's heading accuracy is slept on. He's a monster.

If we had a RWB who could cross to the far post, Perisic would have a few goals by now. He’s so good at coming into the box in open spaces too.

Terrible way to go out. In hindsight, would rather my team just lose in the 90 instead of a penalty shootout like the one Japan have just experienced.

    Powderpuff efforts.

Great to see Japan play. They really gave everything and they fought like their whole country depended on them. I don't often see that from the "big" nations in a WC.

Japan were always losing that penalty shoot out. No experience, worse keeper, worse takers. Had to really go for it in the second half to try and get the winner then. I'm bored of Croatia, either way both would have gone out to Brazil in the next round

Kane will be fine at 33, not reliant on pace and I'm sure still performing close to his peak, just like Suarez, Lewandowski, Benzema etc were

Sterling and Shaw will be 31, so they could easily still be performing at a high level. Sterling will likely be phased out anyway because we have more talented youngsters in his position and Shaw isn't that good.

Maguire and Stones will be 32 which is fine for a centre back.

The only player that won't be at the next one is probably Walker, but again right back is not an issue for us.

I think most of this squad have another tournament for sure, but perhaps a few might become less important as you say

Kane will depend on how his ankles hold up.
Shaw and Sterling rely on pace and I do not see that being there at 31 for them. They are both declining already.

Stones should be fine. Maguire I cannot see being there still.

Walker, Henderson, Wilson, Trippier, Dier and Coady will most likely be gone as well.

That’s 9-10 players that should be replaced. Perfect for a new manager to come in with a good core and then add his players around it. Build around Bellingham, Saka, Foden, Maddison and Rice.

Good assist from Raphinha (should still not be a starter) and great finish by Vini.
