I paid 500k for the gold Neymar to get 70k back (and 800k for gold Mbappe to get 300k back) but that's nothing compared to the losses on the 96 Neymar.
The only card that I paid an massive amount of coins that was worth it was TOTY CR7 when he first got released. That card was beyond broken and still is one of the best (if not the best ST) in the game.

So you got a good few months use out of both of them? Not too bad I guess.
Like you say the losses on the higher value versions are bigger but I don't know anyone who just keeps them without selling & rebuying depending on promos etc.

I’ve also never packed a Neymar special card, but I just thought I’d point out how awesome I am.
