Feature idea for icon development

Most of us have been there. Grinding endlessly for those precious swap tokens or loads and loads of fodder to open an icon pack, just to be massively let down by a card that simply is not good enough. What if Icon cards were still very hard to get, but when we acquired them, we could always somehow use them through customizability?

I would love to see a feature where icons can only be obtained as untradable items, but can develop throughout the season. The year should be split up in different tiers (base, medium, prime, moments) where you can only acquire the ongoing season's version. However, at the start of each new season, you can develop him into the next tier. Instead of just automatically assigning higher pre-selected stats, you can choose exactly which ones to increase, thereby allowing you to tailor him to your playstyle. It should also be possible to choose various trait upgrades such as position, work rate, weak foot/skill moves, etc.

Of course, some icons will still have higher stats than others, but this way any icon would at least still have a great impact on your team and not just end up in your pile of trash. I think it is sad to see these legends of the game being completely unusable, especially when we work so hard to get them.

Let me know what you think and the pros/cons of this type of feature. And if it's something the community supports, I hope an EA employee is watching! :-)

I would personally hate for icons to only be untradable. Iv used plenty and sold them on, to try others. Your solution means you are stuck with the icon you have, which also seems to be your problem here.

Having 4 versions of an icon is ridiculous and is for EAs benefit only.
Not sure I 100% agree with your suggestions but I would like to see icons implemented in a better way

I hear your point. Definitely, a lot of people like to try many players out. However, maybe that's why we still need the loan system (should get some adjustments though). It would be nice for the bigger decision (such as doing an icon SBC) to be more meaningful and persistant.

Yes, in general there is an overflow of cards, icon versions, etc. It would be nice with more focus and persistance, maybe in the shape of development of players rather than constantly changing them.

As a player who don't play that many hours per week, I find it stressful to constantly having to change players to keep up with the opposition. I just want to play the game on the pitch, and therefore I feel like development of icons that I build my team around makes much more sense. Especially when those icons are so hard to get.

I read a lot of comments in here about the feeling of having wasted time because of bad icon pack luck, and I don't see this as a necessity for the developers. Why not approach it differently and make it a matter of customization for everyone with an icon player rather than pure lottery with many losers and few winners? Reward players for their achievements rather than making it a dice roll.

I totally agree, you got a good idea there...But EA is only interested in money and the amount of top icon cards they sell will be affected.... Your idea is more beneficial to the players but it will hurt EA financially.

I completely agree that money plays a major role. However, I do believe that it is possible to create a more rewarding icon system without EA hurting their wallet too much. There are still loads of other items to go hunting for in packs. I don't think that icons drive the sales of those alone. Ultimately, I would prefer no packs to be available for purchase for real money, only customizables, but that is a whole other topic. For now, I just wish that the community didn't get too depressed because of bad icon pack luck, and that all icons could serve a purpose for anyone. They are too rare (especially for us who play less than 3-4 hours per week) to just be tossed away like garbage. I want them to serve justice to their real life legends and be the pillars of my team.
