4K on pc and consoles unrealistic?

Is 4K gaming still years away?

With the rtx 3080 being advertised as 4k it seems underpowered. We still don’t have the console benchmarks but next gen graphics seem years away.

Once you turn on ray tracing games are going to be hard to keep at 30 fps and this is games made in this generation.

Ive seen a lot say next gen consoles and pc is overkill for 1080p but 1080p is the only thing you can get respectable fps.

What is everyone’s thoughts on 4K and will you be moving to it or staying on 1080p or somewhere in between?

Is HDMI 2.1 available yet? Not a tech head although I'm good to go with a 4k gaming monitor but it seems odd that the missing link in being able to use it to its full potential is a cable.

I believe the consoles will be capped at 60 fps so the cable won’t matter much? If they can even keep fps that high moving into the next gen games. They are going to have to have the lowest possible settings to even be playable from what I can tell.

If you are on a pc it would be best to use a displayport cable. Even though it’s going to be hard to get anything above 60 fps going forward too. Maybe when they release the rtx 3090 or 3090ti.

Looking into it more consoles will have a couple games that can do 4k at 120 fps. I think halo infinite was one of them so might need that new cable. Pretty impressive still wondering how long till it’s the normal though.

I doubt it'll be long tbh.

I've remembered a couple of things too. For one, my fancy 1 year old monitor that I thought was future proofed only has HDMI 2.0 ports so getting it up to 2.1 would require a displayport adapter as you sort of suggest.

Looking forward to the 21 graphics on next gen in November but they probably won't be all that in a game like this or do you imagine otherwise?

I’ve never really cared for fifa graphics. I usually play on coop camera so my view is pretty zoomed out. Would prefer higher frame rates and was wondering more about all games not just fifa.

Fifa has never been a benchmark for console power LOL if you are looking for a game with cool graphics, it will not be fifa.

I suppose it’s good for consoles to have an option on fps finally. I suppose it depends what you want fps or 4K. I am just surprised next gen is still kinda pushing 4K when you are going to get less than 30 fps. Maybe the 3090ti will bring that up a little but consoles would have to have everything at no settings and no ray tracing defeating the purpose of 4 k no?

Fortnite competitive settings meaning everything turned off or mostly 1080p runs at around 450 fps. On 4K it runs at around 300 fps. Pros are looking at getting 360 hz monitors to run at 1080p which seems crazy. If you are running that no sense and paying all that for 4k though right?

If you run fortnite at 1080p with ray tracing on you can get around 70fps. If you run fortnite on super settings ray tracing at 4K you get around 22 fps. Consoles probably wouldn’t even be able to run it. With the same settings at 4 k with dlss on you can get 40fps.

These are benchmarks on this gen games. Seems more likely to run 1080p with high refresh and 1440p for graphics while having acceptable fps. 4k still seems out of reach to me unless I am missing something.

I don't know, I've never been a fan of all these numbers in games. As if 1440p60 was making in all games, it would be enough for me to be happy, that is, buying an XboxSeries S is a good choice for me, if not, then I will have to buy Series X. Tomorrow there will be info about all in access and just waiting for it.

This video only convinces me to buy, and after three years, change to a better slim version. In short,
Xbox Series S will run selected games from the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One at 1440p, automatically add HDR, speed up loading, improve texture quality, and double the framerate, i.e. games in 30fps will run at 60, and those in 60 will have 120 fps.

The series s looks like insane value for money at least. I am really curious how ray tracing will benchmark on consoles. Right now it’s bringing pcs to unplayable. Consoles might not use the same ray tracing. When looking around it looks like a weaker more optimized version compared to pcs. Guess we will have to wait to see how it looks.

Should add ps5 ssd is supposed to be better than anything on pc. That is the one plus for consoles although the new rtx are supposed to be similar.

One downside is the consoles are cheap but the ssd storage upgrade is going to be proprietary and expensive.

LOL, Do you see any comparisons of PC vs ps5 vs XsX graphics? I do not think so!!
    I love posts like that

Not the benchmarks but we have all the hardware specs. 3080 is almost double the consoles in power so would benchmark higher. Since we have the benchmarks for the 3080 like I said in a few posts ago assume consoles benchmarks are below those numbers. The only thing is tim sweeny saying the ssd is above the pc right now. Linus tech had to apologize to him which was surprising.

I know what you mean, I give up without a fight which console is better I will stay with mine 1440p60 but I doubt that the consoles will ever overtake PCs. When new consoles come out, they could be better than a high-end PC or very close. It would hold on to that for only a few months because new pc hardware would release :)

Really it’s less about what is better as to me pc and consoles are all kinda disappointing this next gen. I suppose a lot of this is down to expectations.

For me ray tracing was really hyped and is the next gen feature. For it to be acceptable the hardware of pc and consoles needs to be double the power. The games are looking like they can only add a little bit of ray tracing too as it’s crushing fps.

I mean you can go with no graphical options to have acceptable fps. I was just hoping this next gen would bring that more in the middle not one or the other.

It depends on what is expected of the new generation. But such comparisons of the console to pc do not make sense I am amazed by people nowadays who still believe that something on a console can look and work better than on a PC. The console is a budget toy, it will always be.
It will be 2-3 years before studies embrace this "space" technology. And at the same time, PC gamers will be playing 4K, ultra, with RT. Console players will have dreams of something like that again. Then the excitement of the nextgen and the circus will begin again. There has always been and will always be.

I would prefer a decent level of physics / destructible environment, not a constant texture boost.
For me as an online player probably will choose 1080p 120 fps instead of 4K 60
The creators of multi-platforms will not exceed the speed of Sony SSD and that's it. The gameplay is simply dynamic and no one normal will stop and zoom in on objects. Such things are left for the experts - not for the player.

Kutaragi in 2006 said the PS3 would pull 1080 @ 60 and even target 120. LOL
In 2013, Cerny talked about the 4K era. It ended with the stories.
In 2016, it was supposed to be 4K @ 60, ps4 PRO. This was confirmed by specialists from Digital Foundry. LOL
In 2020, the Sony camp is silent about the mythical 4K in 60 frames. Someone missed 8K once,
I am a realist. There has never been a console that fulfilled its promises.
