I play 41212(2) and when I play against someone with any wide 433 I’m destroyed on the wings

Thanks, usefup input. Does this often lead to conceding goals or risky chances?

I’ve been using the 41212 wide the last two days and I’ve lost 3 rivals games and won the rest, probably around ten wins, I have been using the CT’s that @Guillotine_Mack has on his thread, try it out

4141 with overlapping fullbacks kills the narrow formations and is very solid in defense at the same time.

This is quite individual, and I think you have to try what's suits your type of play.
However this is what works best for me.
    Against.
    4231 I allways switch to 4222.
    433 (4) I go with 41212 (2) narrow
    41212 (2) I go with 352 or normal 41212.

352 works quite good against all of you above mentioned formations except for 433.

433(4) will open up the 4231 and 41212 the most, any variation of 433 gives success against the 4231 so much because you are effectively bypassing the two CDM’s as no doubt they have been set to cover centre

442 is the most problematic for me found the only really way to counter it is to match people up with it, the only way you really seem to be able to get a grip on them or by lofting the ball once you get midfield line it’s much easier but that line stays so still

I switched to this 5 games into WL without any use or testing this year.

Kinda enjoyed it as an alternative to 433(2) (i was actually using 4231 2 to start WL, and long ditched 4332 this year but idealistically it's my preference.)

Seemed good in most cases. But same tactics don't always work. Sometimes possession is fine. Sometimes need something faster. Sometimes need wingers on balanced. Sometimes on in behind.

Was considering trying one of the 4411 as well.

I dunno i think 4 can work because the CAM sits between CDMs if they have to cover the CMs. But i think like 433 2 may get marked out by CDMs. For example.
I feel like the 4 wouldn't work against 1212 because the cdm can mark the cam and cms mark the cms.

I'm interested in testing 4411 against it. As hoping the cam/CF creates a misbalance in the defending. Not sure whether CAM or CF would work best.

The best counter is your ability to change the pace of the game. Most people have just one pace at which they play. That makes for very predictable gameplay.

Change the way you attack, sometimes through the centre, sometimes the wings and sometimes use backward passes to your defenders to add variety. You get the drift.

  • I use 4-1-2-1-2 and I dread seeing the 4-4-2 formation, it counters nearly all my plays, I have worked a way round it but it's hard work.
