Final day of 2018 season

The crowd goes into celebration as RCD Espanyol win 2-0 against Real Sociedad to secure Europa league football next season. Espanyol finished the season going nine games unbeaten to climb the table and claim the 7th spot.

Above the field the Espanyol owner, Chen Yansheng, watches the players celebrate with manager Rubi. The manager who will be leaving the club for Real Betis in one weeks time. Rubi led Espanyol to European competition but received a higher wage package from Real Betis and has decided to move on.

Next to Chen in the owners box is Maxi Luis, a 42 year old former football player who will be named the teams next manager as soon as Rubi leaves.

This is the story of Maxi Luis and the start of his career as a manager. I will be asking for your input on Maxi's future and choices to make. But first we start with Barcelona's other team, RCD Espanyol.

Nice choice of club, will be interesting to see if Luis can implement Klopp's gegenpress football at Espanyol or do you plan to create another style of play?

The plan is to try adopting Liverpool's style of play. It will take a few years to bring the right players in but that will make it fun. I love watching Liverpool play as much as I dislike Klopp's antics on the sideline.

Thank you. Maybe if Messi leaves in a few years and Barca reinvest poorly, Espanyol can overtake them?? (In FIFA at least..)

Yes it will be. Small budget and playing on Ultimate or Legendary so it will hopefully be difficult.

Espanyol Goals: What Luis must accomplish

    Finances
    - The starting transfer budget is €11 million
    - An additional €193k have been set a side for increased wages or new signings.
    - Sign one crucial player at midfield or forward
    - Finish with €30 million in profits. Currently at €15m.

    On the pitch
    - Finishing mid-table is the goal in La Liga
    - Finishing in a Europa league spot within 2 years
    - Advancing to the round of 16 is the domestic cup goal

I would say top four will be tough, the squad has less quality than many other teams in Spain like Valencia, Sevilla and Betis who will fight for top four. The tactics will be interesting, not a lot of wingers to play 4-3-3 or 3-4-3.

Should be aiming for a Europa League finish in season 1 IMO

I agree. It's an ambitious target, but if you're not ambitious you should not be in La Liga.

I agree, the squad is not yet built as I want to play but I am hoping to make it work with who I have for now until January transfer window opens.

Completely agree with both of you. I was surprised the board set the goal at mid-table considering we are in Europa now. I will see the season as a failure if we do not finish in a Europa spot.

Such a mixed squad there it will be difficult to compete with the top sides, but the stats against Sevilla look promising despite the result.

Sevilla are good but we blew a lot of chances. I like how the attack looked but need to improve the finish.

The squad has some young talent and some aging players I'm hoping to move in January. I don't expect to compete with the top teams yet but am hoping to next season.

Writing the own goal on the opposite side works confusing.
Losing 3-2 away isn't bad; just grapple your points together in home games.

You are right, should have been 3 points but I see improvements in the attack so some postive signs.

Not sure if some people write the OG on one side and some on others or if I just always mix them up but I could have sworn I put OG under the opponent last year and was told it was wrong? But I agree, it is confusing.

No, that previous form was correct: it's not what side the goal is from (as above), but for whom the goal is for. An own goal therefore is for the other side and requires a mention at the other side.

Not a great start and a bit unlucky in the Alaves game. The team has to grab a win fast if it wants to battle for top four.

Very unlucky with the own goal but still should have beat a 10 man team.

After one month of play only two teams remain perfect, Real Madrid and Valencia. On the flip side only one team has not earned a point, lowly Granada who recently suffered the worst defeat of the season.

Diego Costa has been named Player of the Month with 4 goals in 3 games for Atletico Madrid.
