When I played this mode originally I played counter attack football, I sat in with 4-2-3-1 wide and waited. My scoring methods being fast breaks, wing play / dribbling.
When I tried to play possession football everything became harder. My team ended up with a much higher defensive line to my detriment. Breaking down the opposition if they have good defensive players and a good keeper is very difficult if they are going to sit in and park the bus. Playing like this the game never let me cross the ball and score either with any crossing method (manual / semi / assisted) and It effectively became harder to defend and score trying to play like a dominant side in real life would.
I feel like to be dominant in fifa you have to sit in and be patient, unless you are a monster of skill moves and dribbling in attack. Balance direct football with spamming crosses is less effective than both of the above. In real life teams only really play possession footie, direct footie, fast counters or just massively park the bus and hope for the occasional break out.
Without getting an incredible team and spending a lot of money it seems sitting back and playing counter attack football is the only thing to do to be successful? I am thinking about this in the build up to fifa 20 and deciding if I am going to purchase or not.
Am I wrong?

Up to December in fut19, I tried to play the patient buildup style but it was very hard to score (i don't use timed finishing) and when I lost the ball, it usually ended up in a dangerous counter attack by the other team. I switched to 4231 wide and used quick passes to open gaps for through balls and found that worked better.
It is, but it's more deeper possession. I.e. The territory you get to dominate the football is from a deeper position than in real life - I don't like it in that sense. For possession football I prefer the likes of 4321 or 3421 for realism, but they just seem super suspect to fast counters unless you effectively bore the opponent to death with monster possession which gets slightly silly and unrealistic (in my mind anyway)
I'm not a great finisher either, but not horrible either. On Pro Clubs I have a very good conversion rate for a forward (if I play as one), I tend to score just by finesse shots. Sounds like you are playing more of a balanced version of 4231 wide, which is sort of a compromise and not holding that much realism in my mind (if I saw you play I might feel differently). The questions really become what realistic styles are the most effective to master, because it's a football simulator and I don't want to play like a super try hard that turns it into an arcade game (it's why I'm not bothered conceding crosses either, never have been). I like to enjoy it, enjoy my performance rather than care too much on the result. Good feedback from everyone (so far)
It was back when you could actually counter attack.
I had ~45% possession for like 8 years of Fifa, in Fifa 19 I had 55-60% on average. The game is simply too slow to attack fast and because the meta is to play the ball around until you can get a volley or first time shot off (or have space for a cross) you naturally gain a lot of possession as each attack is pretty slow with lots of back and forth passing.
That may well be the case now; haven't queued ranked since december. I wouldn't be surprised if FIFA20 favours counters again though.
Delay/server issues/spooky words are the ultimate possession/dribble killer.
And also the fact that 4 3 3 or 4 2 3 1 formations benefit more from the randomness and buffed AI defending/automatic pressure/high pressure/just having 6 defenders.
EA needs to remove automatic defense from CDMs or there will never be a balance with the other formations. These two are too dominant.

As a 433 player, I don’t know where you got this from.
