I’m from Belgium and I love this. I hope more countries will follow. I wonder what the consequences for the Belgium eSports will be.

I wonder what the loopholes will be. Will people be able to use a VPN to buy FP’s or what? No matter what, I think this is pretty big regardless.

Account from different region will have the option to buy FPs. Obviously you won't be able to buy them with credit cards but you will need to buy playstation network cards for that account's region, add the funds to your account by redeeming the code and then buy the points using the money from the wallet.

So you basically need to make a new account with another region? So Belgian people will make a new account instead then? That sucks tbh, I hope more countries follow as a statement though.

Yeah I think that will be the only way.

Problem is that Belgium has decent clout within the EA since Brussels is basically the capital of the EU. I can see this spreading to other EU countries, this is a pretty big problem for EA.

It's been coming for a while but it's about time it started happening.

Interesting this on how it will be managed? I lived in Luxembourg for few years and my flat was located 5 minutes away from the Belgium boarder. Wonder how will EA ensure that only
    Belgium customers are exempt.

was talking to a buddy and brought up how fp are considered gambling, I'm in the usa and i believe in order not to blow up this hopeless pack opening cash cow for EA, they will find a loophole. something along the lines of being able to buy players as opposed to hoping to pack them. packs will be only rewards, earned and a different store type area to buy lets say ronaldo for 20 $.....that's a possibility

Yeah, but if they're gonna sell players, that's how it should be, it's not a loophole. If you can buy Ronaldo for X amount of money, you can at least decide if that's a fair price or not. With packs, you can literally spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and never pack him.

Although personally, I'd hope they just get rid of P2W bs. What is the point of making a competitive game where you can buy your way to a better team?

They should make Pro Clubs the competitive game mode - makes no sense that the competitive mode is the one where 10 players are AI controlled at all times. And then they should just sell boots, kits, whatever for that. Look at Fortnite, the Pay to Look Good system works.

this is gonna be interesting how they handle this, and how quickly they start making changes.

It's a choice until its addictive, which packs are,and for ea to not even acknowledge it can become addictive and you are gambling with your money shows the kind of people they are.

The weekend league should come with warnings as sitting in front of a screen for that many hours is not healthy mentally or physically, and whilst I agree we choose to do so, people should help each other not just rip people off no matter the cost.

Yup, I hope others follow suit

The system as it is preys on the addictive nature of humans. It's one thing to exploit that behavior to run a casino or sell scratch off lottery tickets to adults.

But lots of kids are playing this game, and there's a reason we have laws keeping minors out of casinos

Maybe I am being harsh but its a video game and i think people should take more responsibility for there actions. Kids i get, but parents can have a say in how much there kid spends. I get the point but its a cop out to blame EA solely for why you can't stop spending money.

Bad way of looking at it imo. We're not talking about loose change fifa points are extortionate and is VERY addictive hence why there's so many players because the gameplay is awful. Everyone's different and addiction effects everyone differently

If you could only open packs with video game earned currency that would be one thing, but people (including kids) are pumping thousands of real $$ into the game.

    Needs regulation

People only pump in what their card affords. However, I know my nephew abused his parents card by 300 quid so perhaps an extra layer of security. I’m fortunate I can afford any FPs I personally buy

I kind of agree on this as well. It's too easy to always blame the maker. There's a whole lot of things that are addictive were the government makes money off, and those are not made 'illegal' (cigarettes and booze come to mind). And these are even bad for ones health!

I am interested in the concept though, are they going to prohibit all kinds of micro transactions that have some kind of gamble in them? Let's say, lootboxes in overwatch?

I know a kid in belgium that maxed out dads credit card on ultimate team, not knowing what he was doing, or just couldnt resist.
Kids dont know the value of money, and yes this was the fathers fault, but still..
I wouldnt mind paying for packs, but tbh.. 20euro for a 100k packs, and getting nothing in return...

I chatted with ea help and they block Belgium IP address so with only changing region and country it still doesn't works.

"We seek to bring choice, fairness, value and fun to our players in all our games. In addition to providing players options in how they play, we include pack probabilities in our games for the transparency players want to make informed content choices. While we are taking this action, we do not agree with Belgian authorities’ interpretation of the law, and we will continue to seek more clarity on the matter as we go forward. The impact of this change to FIFA Ultimate Team in Belgium is not material to our financial performance."

yea err, they need to bring this to UK... Gambling Commision here needs to be aware of this and this is ridiculous and EA needs to be stopped - be fair, We pay 50 to 80quid for the game, why should we pay extra to build teams!!!

Gaming of all types is generally agreed to be addictive, though it seems anything can be addictive these days, but I digress. Something such as gaming and gambling do fall into the same category, so it would make sense for countries to take a closer look at these games with in game purchases and prize boxes or packs in the case of FIFA.

Now, my guess is EA may actually welcome the idea of eliminating FIFA points as they can then transition to a cash model that is more of a direct pay to play model. Meaning they can do what they really want without having to look like the bad guys.

Step two can then be to put a real dollar figure on players so you can spend real dollars on players or use in game coins to buy directly from EA for an untradable player. This is the model now used in GT Sport for buying cars. Players purchased in this manner could be sold back directly to EA only for in game coins. This could perhaps have an impact on reducing some of the coin buying.

Not sure how that is working out for GT Sport, but it is the way the game is now set up for Earning or buying vehicles. Either use real money or in game coins... but there is not a new version of GT Sport every year.

Of course that leaves those that are just playing with in game currency at a possible disadvantage, but would leave packs in place, leave an updated market in place, and a steady revenue stream for EA.

It would also mitigate the gambling considerations to a certain extent.

Just strictly from a game play perspective the market needs revamped anyhow. Why allow players of the game the ability to make extra coins off such items as position change cards or fitness cards. All of those should be direct buy from EA with coins and untradable items along with the injury cards, etc. they can still be in packs, but remove those items from the market. No team has to shop around for a CAM to CF position modifier card to get their chemistry up to 100 in real life, so take it off the market.

Limit the market to players and managers being freely exchanged. Not stadiums or kits or balls for goodness sakes. Balls... seriously who buys balls on the market? Nobody, ever... So why have them on the market even? Laziness perhaps. Not sure, but something in the dynamics has to change otherwise EA could find themselves in a sticky situation.

I agree, no one is forcing me and rightly said i haven't ever since i lost around £150 back when it started.. My point here is raising awareness - i can afford it but i choose not to, to those who can't thats where the issue of gambling comes into force.

    Hope i'm making sense buddy.
