Barcelona, Catalonia, ESP (AP) - RCD Espanyol came through with a huge win on Thursday evening as they defeated Club Brugge 5-3 on Match Day Five of the Group Stage of the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League. The win moved Espanyol to the top of Group A with just one match day remaining.

Fielding their first choice line up, Espanyol was able to grab an early lead. Oscar Melendo sent a long through ball that Emmanuel Boateng ran onto. He gave it one touch, then slid it past keeper Karlo Letica to make it 1-nil.

That lead was short lived though, as Hector Vallalba sent in a long cross that Kaveh Rezaei volleyed past Edu Frias to level the match just five minutes later.

In the 19th minute, Jeremie Boga dribbled down the left side and into the box, stopped and laid the ball off to Carles Alena, who was trailing the play. He easily beat Letica to put Espanyol back in front 2-1.

In the 33rd minute, Alena dribbled along the touch line, passed it into Alex Lopez, who found an unmarked Emmanuel Boateng at the top of the six. Boateng one-timed it into the top left corner to make it 3-1. Boateng would put a cap on his hat trick in the dying moments of the opening half as he came in with Carles Alena on a 2 on 1. Alena drew keeper Kario Letica towards him, then passed it to Boateng for the tap in as Espanyol went to the break up 4-1.

A feisty Club Brugge would not go away on this foggy evening though. Just four minutes into the second half, Frank Acheampong curled one into the top left corner from just outside the penalty area to pull Brugge back to within a pair.

Espanyol would seal it in the 64th minute. Moments after Carles Alena headed one just wide of the left post. A turnover saw Oscar Melendo pass it into Emmanuel Boateng in the box. He drew two defenders, then passed across to an unmarked Jeremie Boga, who tapped it home to make it 5-2.

Frank Acheampong would add a goal in injury time to provide the final margin.

The win moved RCD Espanyol to (3-0-2, 9 pts) and to the top of Group A as Besiktas JK drew with Malmo FF 1-1. They both sit a (2-1-2, 7 pts), while Club Brugge is in last at (2-0-3, 6 pts). Espanyol can advance to the knockout stage with a draw in Malmo on December 12th.

Espanyol was outshot 19-12 in this widely entertaining and wide open match. Both teams played their high press, causing turnovers and plenty of scoring chances. They return to La Liga action on Sunday as they will host Villarreal CF, who currently sit in 8th place.

Espanyol dominated this match from the start, outshooting Real Betis 9-2 in the opening half, but it was a Gary Hooper goal in the 44th minute that gave Real Betis a 1-nil lead heading into halftime. Hooper converted a penalty after Marc Roca was called for a foul in the box, when replay clearly showed that Aissa Mandi dove.

In the opening moments of the second half, Emmanuel Boateng worked himself free in the Real Betis box and was absolutely mugged in the box with no call from the referee. Manager Raul Tamudo was going bonkers.

Real Betis moved the ball down the pitch and Carles Alena was called for a ticky-tack foul about 35 yards out. Takashi Inui's free kick was then headed home by Pedro Antonio Vico Villegas to put Real Betis up 2-nil. Espanyol had dominated the match and found themselves down by two.

Malmo, SWE (AP) - RCD Espanyol needed only a draw to advance to the knockout stage of the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening in Sweden. After soundly defeating Malmo FF back in early October, Espanyol never trailed in this one, but struggled to a 3-3 draw to get the point that they needed to win Group A and advance to the knockout stage.

This back and forth affair got going in the tenth minute as Tim Weah took a pass from Frank van der Meer, spun and beat keeper Johan Dahlin to put Espanyol up 1-nil.

Malmo FF, who lost the first meeting 3-nil in Spain, knew that they would need at least a tie to advance and possibly a victory. In the 23rd minute, Guillermo Molins centered the ball to Carlos Strandberg, who volleyed it to an open Fouad Bachirou, whom one-timed it past a helpless Edu Frias to level the match.

In the 39th minute, Frank van der Meer took a corner kick. His bender was met by Timothy Weah, who headed it into the far side of the goal to put Espanyol back in front, 2-1. BUt Malmo answered in the dying moments of the half on a corner of their own. Arnor Ingvi Traustason sent in the corner. Edu Frias tried to punch it away and missed, while Carlos Standberg headed it home to level the match.

Early in the second half, Pipa dribbled the ball up the right side, and centered the ball into Timothy Weah in the box. He drew two defenders and calmly passed it to an open Mario Diaz for a layup goal to put Espanyol back in front.

Malmo FF turned up the pressure, knowing that they needed at least a point, and in the 81st minute, they got their reward, A long ball was sent in from the midfield with Carlos Standberg heading it back to Anders Christiansen. Christiansen then found Marcus Antonsson breaking open in the middle of the pitch. Antonsson cracked a bender into the top right corner from 25 yards out to once again level the match, now at 3-3.

Espanyol looked to have an opportunity in the 85th minute, as Timothy Weah got loose in the Malmo penalty area and was tripped just as he tried to get off a shot. The referee thought there was no foul, despite the protesting from Espanyol. The match would end in a draw, but that result, combined with a draw between Besiktas and Club Brugge, sent Malmo FF through into the knockout stage.

Timothy Weah earned Man of the Match honors with two goals on four shots. He added an assist on 88% passing with two key passes.

Espanyol returns to La Liga play on Sunday as they host RC Deportivo.

Congratulations, top of the group in the UEL. Lokomotiv is an affordable rival, good luck.

In LaLiga, I hoped for a step forward this season, but it seems that the team isn't ready for it yet. Still very good season so far.
