Barcelona, ESP (AP) - Espanyol played well on Saturday afternoon, but fell at home to Atletico Madrid 2-nil. Antoine Griezmann and Gelson Martins scored for the visitors as they kept their slim hopes of a league title alive with the victory.

Gelson Martins put Atletico in front just five minutes in as he headed home a cross from Thomas Lemar. It was Martins fifth goal on the campaign.

Emmanuel Boateng, returning from suspension, was stopped by an amazing save from Jan Oblak in the ninth minute. Carles Alena, also back from suspension, knocked one off of the woodwork in the 24th minute as Espanyol tried to level the match.

Antoine Griezmann looked like he was going to put Atletico up by two in the opening moments of the second half, but his shot from just outside the six yard box sailed just wide. Minutes later, he would add to Atletico's lead as he took a pass from Diego Costa and knocked it in over Edu Frias in the 51st minute to make it 2-nil.

Medhi Benatia would trip up Emmanuel Boateng just inside the box on a golden scoring opportunity in the 57th minute for a penalty. Epanyol players argued that Benatia should be sent off, but he was only shown a yellow card. Jan Oblak then came through for Atletico with an incredible diving stop on Carles Alena's penalty. Oblak guessed left, dove and managed to get a finger tip on the ball to deflect it just wide.

In the 63rd minute, winger Leo Baptistao had a glorious chance, but his shot hit the woodwork and stayed out. Carles Alena would get another chance in the 85th minute, as he spun free in the box, but his shot rolled just wide of the right post.

Atletico Madrid (24-7-5, 79 pts) would hold on for the clean sheet, Oblak's thirteenth on the campaign, tied for tops in La Liga. Griezmann's goal was his 18th, tops in La Liga. Atletico remains five points back of Real Madrid for the La LIga title with just two matches left.

Espanyol (15-9-12, 54 pts) remains in seventh position as their six match unbeaten streak came to an end. They are two points clear of Real Sociedad, a team that they close the season against in two weeks. Before that match, Espanyol will head to Leganes to face last place CD Leganes (5-9-22, 24 pts) next Saturday. Leganes has already been relegated.

    90' - (ESP) - C. Alena

    76' - (LEG) - Rafinha (Yellow)

Leganes, ESP (AP) - Espanyol got a goal in the dying moments of the match from Carles Alena to salvage a 2-2 draw at CD Leganes on a rainy Saturday afternoon on the outskirts of Madrid. This one was an absolute thriller over the final ten minutes and Espanyol blew a one goal lead, then fell behind, and rallied.

After a scoreless opening half dominated by Espanyol, Sean Maguire broke through in the 50th minute taking a beautiful pass from Mario Diaz on the wing, dribbling once then placing it into the top left corner to give Espanyol the goal that they were looking for.

Jonathan Silva then was robbed by Edu Frias in the 61st minute to keep Espanyol in front. Nabil El Zahar then somehow did not score in the 69th minute on a ball than got crossed to him. He had an empty net, but his shot hit the crossbar, maybe thanks to a late defensive lunge by Adria Pedrosa. El Zahar would finally find an answer in the 84th minute with Leganes pressing, Lisandro Magallan sent a long ball from the other side of midfield. El Zahar out-leaped both Edu Frias and Pedrosa at the top of the box, heading it into the empty goal to tie the match at 1-1.

Just four minutes later, Raul Garcia sent in a cross from the wing and again El Zahar got a head to it. This time it went in off the inside of the far post and Leganes had a stunning 2-1 lead, in a match that Espanyol desperately needed at least one point.

Raul Tamudo then made a tactical decision to sub in Emmanuel Boateng and the switch looked like a brilliant move. In the dying moments on injury time, Boateng worked a gorgeous give and go with Carles Alena, and Alena put a left footed shot in off of the left post to tie the match at 2-2 and give Espanyol the point that they desperately needed.

CD Leganes (5-10-22, 25 pts) with nothing to play for after being relegated, played with passion and heart, in almost pulling off the huge upset. Espanyol (15-10-12, 55pts) now sits three points up on Real Sociedad with one match left in the campaign, and they will play each other for the final Europa League spot in La Liga. Espanyol won 2-1 at Real Sociedad back in January, but they will need at least a draw to secure 7th place as a loss will give Real Sociedad the spot as they hold the second tiebreaker between the clubs, which is goal difference.

Barcelona, ESP (AP) - Well, you couldn't ask for more in a season finale.

Espanyol built a 2-nil lead just twelve minutes in, then gave up three straight to fall behind, before a late Marc Roca equalizer got them the point that they needed to qualify for a spot in the 2019-20 Europa League.

Carles Alena got the party started early in Barcelona as he scored off of a pass from Sergi Darder just five minutes in to give Espanyol a 1-nil lead over Real Sociedad in a winner take all game for the final Europa League spot from La Liga. Just seven minutes later, Leo Baptistao was there to put home a rebound of an Estaban Granero shot to make it 2-nil and it looked like Espanyol would cruise.

But just six minutes later Willian Jose passed into Youri Tielemans, who dribbled into the box and beat Edu Frias with a right footed shot to cut the Espanyol lead in half. The teams would go to half with Espanyol clinging to the one goal advantage, Outshooting Real Sociedad 10-2.

The visitors would equalize at the hour mark when Theo Hernandez sent in a cross that Emiliano Sala got his head on and scored over Edu Frias. Moments later, Sergi Darder would pick up a second yellow card for a tackle from behind on Willian Jose and he was sent off. Espanyol would have to play the final 30+ minutes down a man.

In the 78th minute, Victor Sanchez would turn the ball over to Mikel Oyarzabal. Oyarzabal would dribble into the box and hit a right footed rocket into the top right corner to give Real Sociedad a stunning 3-2 lead as it sent a hush over the crowd at RCDE Stadium.

Espanyol then turned up the pressure and were rewarded in the 85th minute. Sergi Darder dribbled into the box, passed it into Marc Roca at the top of the six. Roca turned and one-timed it into the right corner of the goal to level the match and send the RCDE Stadium crowd into a frenzy.

They would hold off Real Sociedad to earn the point and finish the La Liga season in seventh place. That is normally just outside the Europa League berth, but because the champion of the Copa de Espana gets a bid and both clubs in the final finished inside the top six, La Liga gets an extra bid.

Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Real Betis and FC Barcelona received UEFA Champions League invites finishing in the top four. Valencia CF, Villarreal CF and RCD Espanyol received UEFA Europa League invites for finishing fifth through seventh. Espanyol received the bid because the Copa de Espana champion receives an automatic bid into the Europa League, but FC Barcelona already received a Champions League berth.
Levante UD, SD Huesca, and CD Leganes were relegated to Segunda Division.

UD Las Palmas, and RC Deportivo earned automatic promotion back into La Liga. Real Sporting won the playoff for the third and final La Liga berth in 2019-20. None of the three are strangers to the top division in Spanish football.

The La Liga Player of the Year was Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann. He also won the Golden Boot Award with 19 La Liga goals.

The 2018-19 campaign was wildly successful for RCD Espanyol. They were pegged for a mid-table finish and managed to finish in seventh position in the highly competitive La Liga. The August addition of young midfielder Carles Alena from FC Barcelona was a huge addition to the midfield and he lived up to the billing. He earned Man of the Match honors eight times and was the La Liga Player of the Month twice.

The seventh place finish allowed Espanyol to qualify for the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League for the eighth time in club history. The reached the final in 1988 and 2007, losing to Bayer Leverkusen and Sevilla.

Looking ahead to 2019-207 as of right now here is how our lineup looks before the transfer window opens:

As a rule, I like youth and hate to over pay for vets, but we have a ton of transfer money to spend if we want to.

    FORMATION: 4-1-4-1

As you can see, the club continues to turn over the roster with a look towards the future and a more youthful side. There are still a handful of veterans that could be moved before the summer transfer window closes.

This club is being built around youth, especially in 20-year-old keeper Edu Frias and 21-year-old midfielder Carles Alena. Teenagers Estaban Ponce, Mario Diaz, and Frank van der Meer are getting extended looks in training and could be looking to find a spot on the first team sheet sooner rather than later.

Young Alex Lopez showing off his skills this summer.

England (AP) - Espanyol failed to make it out of the group stage for the second consecutive year in their pre-season tournament as they prepare for the start of the 2019-20 campaign. The Periquitos lost once, and drew twice, finishing last in their group, tied with AS Saint Etienne and Newcastle United.

In their opening match, Espanyol went with a lineup mixed with starters and youngsters. Estaban Ponce would score in the 15th minute to put Espanyol up 1-nil over Serie A side Atalanta. After that, it would be all Atalanta, scoring five unanswered goals to win 5-1. The referee had a field day, handing out 10 cards in all, seven yellows and two reds against Espanyol. Mario Hermosa picked up a straight red for a tackle from behind, and Sergi Darder picked up two yellows. leading to a red.

On match day two, the Periquitos, fielding their B-side, quickly fell behind Newcastle United 2-nil in the opening 15 minutes. But they would fight back, getting goals from Mario Diaz in the 57th minute and a late equalizer from Alex Lopez to earn the draw. 22-year-old Lopez, back from his loan at Feyenoord, looks like he may be ready for first team minutes, maybe against lesser sides or in Copa de Espana.

In Espanyol's final group stage match against AS Saint-Etienne, they would take the lead when Damia scored in the 41st minute. But an equalizer by Yann M'Vila in the 62nd minute would be enough to eliminate Espanyol as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Atalanta would win Group A with three wins. Saint Etienne advanced with a goal differential of (-1), over Newcastle United (-3) and Espanyol (-4). PSV won Group B with two wins and a draw. Crystal Palace advanced to the semifinals also with five points after a win and two draws.

PSV defeated AS Saint-Etienne 3-1 in the semifinals and Atalanta took care of Crystal Palace 3-nil. PSV would then go on to upset Atalanta in the final 1-nil. Hirving Lozano would score the only goal for PSV in the final, in the 66th minute, and also earned top player honors for the tournament with four goals and an assist.

Barcelona, ESP (AP) - The summer of 2019 has been a busy one for the "other" team in Barcelona as RCD Espanyol has used the transfer market to transfer out some aging players and bring in some excellent young talent. This has lowered payroll and increased the clubs value, while giving them opportunities to play some younger players that they club feel are ready.

Gone are Aaron Martin (Roma - $34.9 M), Bonja Iglesius (FC Porto - $20M), Pablo Piatti (Brighton & Hove Albion - $12.4M), Estaban Granero (Atalanta - $8.7M), Alvaro (Girona - $5.4M) and youngsters Javier Puado and Victor Gomez.

The club added some young talent, mainly on the back end. Central defender Filip Benkovic comes over from Leicester City for $20M. Fullbacks Theo Hernandez ($20M - Real Madrid) and Jordi Calavera (SD Eibar - $8.5M) will both be first team selections. The club also added young American striker Tim Weah from PSG for $5M.

All in all, the club received $84.6M in transfer fees and spent $53.M.

Did they improve the club? That is the question. The Board of Directors wants the club to finish in a top 6 position in La Liga. The media feels as though the club will be fighting to stave off relegation with an 18th place finish. The club moved very talented players in Martin, Igelsius, Piatti and Granero. Players that were vital in their run to seventh place last campaign. Manager Raul Tamudo feels like the time for youth in now and he is willing to bet that this club will benefit from the youth movement.

    Time will tell.

Manchester City won the UEFA Super Cup, defeating Portugal's Sporting CP 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Below is the new starting lineup for the opener at home against Sevilla on August 19th.

Barcelona, ESP (AP) - RCD Espanyol opened up the 2019-20 campaign with a thud, as they dropped a 4-1 decision to one of the projected top squads in La Liga, Sevilla. Wesley scored twice in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and send Sevilla on to the dominating victory.

Central defensive midfielder Marc Rosa for Espanyol was sent off just eight minutes in for a tackle from behind in the midfield and that set the tone in this one. Playing down a man, Espanyol conceded just eight minutes later as Simon Kjaer volleyed in a failed clearance from Leo Baptistao to make it 1-nil Sevilla.

Young midfielder Alex Lopez would equalize in the 39th minute on what was Espanyol's best scoring chance of the match. Carles Alena dribbled through the midfield, passed it in to Sean Maguire on the left side of the box. He passed it to an open Alex Lopez standing unmarked at the top of the six, and his one-timer found the back of the net to level the match.

But the one man advantage began to take it's toll after halftime as Espanyol looked to tire a bit, giving Sevilla the space that they would need. In the 59th minute, Wesley got into position in the box and headed a cross in off of a deflection off of the shoulder of newcomer Felipe Benkovic to put Sevilla back in front. Minutes later Wesley would get into a great position in the box again, and this time he headed in a lofted ball from Roque Mesa to make it 3-1. Sevilla would add a fourth in injury time as Roger intercepted a ball from Lluis Lopez at the top of the box and drilled it past Edu Frias.

Sevilla dominated as would be expected, playing the final 82 minutes up by a man and they outshot Espanyol 16-3. They held a slight possession advantage too, helping to wear down the undermanned Espanyol side.

Espanyol will now head to Ireland for a mid-week Europa League qualification match against Cork City. The two-legged tie will determine which side advances to the group stage of the 2019-20 Europa League.

Benkovic was in the right place at the right time as a clearance header, from a corner kick, landed right at his feet. He teed it up into an empty net to put Espanyol up 1-nil just nine minutes into the match.

Six minutes later, it was Alex Lopez. Emmanuel Boateng had the ball near the top of the box and he slipped a pass into the center that Alex Lopez ran onto and one-timed past a helpless Gary Woods to make it 2-nil. It was Lopez's third goal in five matches for Espanyol this summer.

Marc Roca would make it 3-nil in the 39th minute. Estanban Ponce was dribbling at the top of the box and attempted a shot that got deflected right to Marc Roca. He blasted it in off of the left post and the rout was on.

Espanyol outshot Cork City 14-7 and held a significant advantage in possession.

These two teams will meet in the second leg next Thursday at RCDE Stadium with the winner advancing to the group stage of the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League.

Carles Alena's brace helped Espanyol pick up their first La Liga victory on the campaign.

    8' - (ESP) - S. Darder
    32' - (ESP) - C. Alena
    35' - (ESP) - C. Alena
    42' - (RAY) - Bebe
    89' - (RAY) - A. Garcia

    8' - (RAY) - O. Trejo (Yellow)
    65' - (ESP) - L. Baptistao (Red)
    75' - (ESP) - S. Maguire (Yellow)

Madrid (AP) - Espanyol carried over some momentum, from their big Europa League midweek win, on Sunday afternoon as they jumped out to a three goal lead, then held on for a 3-2 road victory at Rayo Vallecano. Carles Alena led the way with two goals as Espanyol tries to put that season opening loss behind them.

Things got started quickly for Espanyol as Sean Maguire found an unmarked Sergi Darder at the top of the box in the eighth minute and Darder fired a shot in just off the underside of the crossbar to give Espanyol the early lead.

Carles Alena then missed two golden opportunities. He had a shot just deflected wide in the 17th minute, then missed from close range in the 20th minute. Rayo Vallecano would also miss a great opportunity to level the match in the 27th minute when Tomas Sandoval's shot went just wide of the left post.

Espanyol and Carles Alena would extend their lead in the 32nd minute. Alena beat his marker in the box and placed the ball into the lower right corner. Six minutes later it would be Alena again. This time Emmanuel Boateng set him up and he converted to make it 3-nil and it appeared as though the rout was on.

BUt Rayo Vallecano got one back just before halftime as Gorka Elustondo sent a through ball that Bebe ran onto and one-timed into the top left corner to make it 3-1 and give Rayo a bit of hope heading into the break.

Leo Baptistao would get sent off in the 65th minute for a rather harsh tackle from behind on Jose Pozo. Espanyol would have to defend a two goal lead for the final 25 minutes with just ten men. They did a decent job limiting chances, but a breakdown in the 89th minute gave Rayo a chance. Tomas Sandoval dribbled in and took a shot from the top of the box that was deflected by Filipe Benkovic. The ball went right to Alvaro Garcia who left footed the ball under the bar past a helpless Edu Frias to cut the Espanyol lead to just one.

Espanyol would get it to the garage though as they held on for the 3-2 victory. Sergi Darder earned Man of the Match honors for Espanyol with some excellent play in the midfield. Carles Alena was just as good, scoring twice and narrowly missing two other chances.

Espanyol will host Cork City on Thursday in the second leg of their Europa League qualification tie. Espanyol leads 3-0 after the first leg on the road, and just needs to not have a complete meltdown to advance to the group stage of the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League.

Barcelona (AP) - Espanyol advanced to the group stage of the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League as they cruised past Cork City 2-nil at home on Thursday evening to win 5-nil on aggregate. Sean Maguire scored both goals for Espanyol with Edu Frias earning the clean sheet.

Sean Maguire was unstoppable in the opening half. It began in the ninth minute as he got behind the Cork City defense, but his shot went wide of the far post. A few minutes later, Estaban Ponce set him up just outside the six yard box, but again his shot attempt sailed wide.

In the 22nd minute, Aaron Berry hauled down Maguire from behind in the Cork City penalty area. Berry was sent off with an immediate red card and Maguire was sent to the penalty spot. He would convert and Espanyol had a 1-nil lead, and four goal advantage on aggregate.

Maguire would have three more outstanding chances in the opening half, but could not convert. In all, he would take seven first half shots, but just three were on target.

In the 81st minute, Maguire would get his brace. Lluis Lopez took a short corner, passing to Victor Sanchez at the top of the box. He found Maguire, who dribbled past his marker and slipped the ball through the legs of Gary Woods and in for his second goal. Maguire finished with nine of Espanyol's 13 shots in the match. Oddly enough, Marc Roca picked up Man of the Match honors over Maguire, who seemed unstoppable.

Espanyol will now return to La Liga action on Sunday as they host surprising Deportivo Alaves who are tied atop the La Liga table with Sevilla after two match days, earning full points with wins over Girona and Atletico Madrid.

RCD Espanyol looks like they were the busiest this year during the summer transfer window. After finishing in seventh place last season and earning a Europa League spot, manager Raul Tamudo did not sit still. He transferred out eight players this summer and brought in six new bodies for a net profit of $28.5M. The average age of the players leaving was 25 years and the average age of those brought in was 21. The top four big money additions were on the back end with four new starters added. Five of the biggest La Liga transfers this summer involved Espanyol.

The biggest La Liga moves this summer were:
Real Madrid sending Mateo Kovacic to Bayern Munchen for $76M.
Espanyol's LB Aaron Martin transferred to Roma for $34.9M.
Celta Vigo's CM Nemanja Radoja transferred to Lazio for $29.4M.
Espanyol's RM Leo Baptistao transferred to AS Monaco for $22.1M.
Espanyol's ST Bonja Iglesius transferred to FC Porto for $20M.
Real Madrid LB Theo Hernandez transferred to Espanyol for $20M.
Leicester City's CB Filipe Benkovic transferred to Espanyol for $20M.

The total amount spent across all leagues was $403M.

Here is a summary of Espanyol's transfers since July 1.

And here is a look at the updated RCD Espanyol roster moving forward.

Carles Alaves was sent off in injury time and will miss the next match.

    90'+ - (ESP) - C. Alena (Red)

Barcelona, ESP (AP) - RCD Espanyol returned to La Liga action on Sunday afternoon with some new faces in the lineup and played to a scoreless draw with Deportivo Alaves. Alaves dominated the second half, but could not find a goal as they dropped points for the first time this campaign.

Theo Hernandez made the play of the match just four minutes in as he cleared a ball off the line on a volley from Mubarek Wakaso off of a corner. During the scramble in front of the Espanyol goal, Sergi Darder had his foot stepped on and had to leave the match.

Espanyol would generate a couple of great scoring chances late in the first half. In the 37th minute, Jeremie Boga dribbled along the end line and found an unmarked Carles Alena at the top of the six yard box. But Alena's one-timer sailed just wide of the far post. Then in injury time, Boga got in alone on Fernando Pacheco but he got behind the ball and his shot sailed just over the bar. Espanyol held a 4-3 advantage in first half shots, and a pretty healthy advantage in possession.

But Deportivo Alaves was a different team after halftime. They dominated possession and completely shut down anything Espanyol tried to do. They would outshoot Espanyol 13-0 in the second half, but could not capitalize. They best chances both came from John Guidetti. In the 66th minute, Edu Frias just managed to tip a Guidetti shot over the bar, and in the 87th minute, Guidetti came in alone, but his shot just glanced off the outside of the far post.

Ibai Gomez of Alaves was named Man of the Match. He had two shots, both off target, but he dominated play in the midfield. Edu Frias made six saves to preserve the clean sheet for Espanyol.

Up next for Espanyol (1-1-1, 4 pts) is a trip to Basque Country for a matchup with SD Eibar (1-0-2, 3 pts). Deportivo Alaves (2-1-0, 7 pts) remains tied atop La Liga through three match days.
