Tips for moving away from assisted

I have always enjoyed the feel of switching passes and shots from assisted to semi, but always end up struggling with the passing game and giving up before learning. This year I've decided to learn to master it because I feel like it's too easy with everything assisted. Do any of you have any pointers about things to consider besides the obvious one of just practicing? I only play career mode so online issues are irrelevant.

Tip- don't play online with manual. You'll play too many people who deliberately lag it up when you have the ball and then you'll switch it back anyway as you can't pass for ❤️❤️❤️❤️!
