It makes me laugh when people say we went too far with the “it’s coming home” stuff. It was a fantastic bit of fun. Supporting a sports team or individual should be about believing you can beat everyone and not the boring negativity that we’ve heard too often.
We all knew that the Jocks and the Paddy’s would jump straight on it as soon as we lost and that’s fine but it makes it even more funny to me because they are so bitter and petty. I love winding them up because I know they’ll never win anything and so do they.
I think if you were on the outside of it, I would guess you would think it played out pretty quickly. Hey, good in you guys for having a team that made it as far as it did. Im not salty. You can do whatever you want. I do think though that you shouldn't be so surprised/hurt/offended that others wanted it to stop.
We’re not surprised and I’ll let you into a secret, we never really believed it was coming home. Well, there are a few deluded fans out there but don’t you think we know they aren’t quite good enough yet? But the whole point is to have fun with it. We love our football so let’s get excited sort of mentality. Let the others be bitter, we don’t really care.

We don’t care about that, we just care that these fools thought we actually believed our team would win the World Cup, I sit in a stadium freezing my bollocks off every other week watching a team play ****, why would I suddenly start thinking our failed national team were any good.
Never mind then. You obviously totally missed everything I said.
No I got it, I’m just saying that we aren’t surprised that people wanted it to stop, what has surprised us is how serious people thought we all were. A lot of fans actually think we were stupid enough to believe England would steam roll this tournament.
Nope. You didn't get it. People wanted "its coming home" to stop like they wanted the Spice Girls, or Justin Bieber to stop. It got played out.
You do know most people over here don’t want to hear it either?? It’s like Christmas songs, good for about a day then boring.

Probably annoyed them because that song gets in your head and you can’t get it out. Not bad if you’re an England fan but can imagine pretty frustrating if you’re a scot! Lol

I DJ as a hobby and pretty much hate it, also I’m old enough for it to be in the charts the first time when I was like 15 so didn’t like it then haha
However those lads did well and went way beyond our expectations, for the first time since 2006 the country has a team they can get behind. They gave it their all and worked as a team.
That is nice.
Doesn't even have a third of the talent the golden gen had but they work as a team which more then makes up for it. People have a reason to believe again when all hope was lost.

Fair enough. I wasnt referring to the song as much as the saying. But, I'm willing to concede here.

How many times do you reckon I’ve had to read it on FB for the last month
I’ve still never typed it out or posted it in my life, a proud record.
Call us overyhyped bottlejobs all you want but i would rather have a good run then bottle it than bottle it in the group stages or not get to Russia at all
Boys done good
Do think the context of England as a nation right now has to be taken into account as well (obv no need to get into debates now). Getting far into a tournament distracted us for a bit.

We’ve always been disliked because of our colonial past but I wonder if we’re also disliked now because we want to leave the Europe club too? Are we the Millwall of world footy?
I know mate, it makes me laugh, some people are taking it far too seriously, for most of us, the extra games England got to play just meant another sesh in the pub getting **** faced, then chucking a sickie the next day.
“Another sesh in the pub”, “getting **** faced”, “chucking a sickie the next day”.... grow up mate. Pretty much sums up the sadness of England fans if that’s what the WC is all about for them, trying to wind up and antagonise opposition fans and the whole we don’t care if nobody likes us attitude.
You literally made a thread to wind England fans up and are now having a go at England fans for antagonising opposition fans lmao
Its hypocrisy at its finest I hate you and you show no class you arrogant fans with overhyped bottle jobs. Just like Frankie Boyle against a heckler "i dont think were very friendly us Scots are we", gets interrupted "Yes we are you liar", "Yes we are you liar, do you not see how your undermining your own argument there".
Football did come home it made everyone proud of our national team again players playing for the shirt, that’s what it has given us again the lads did amazing to get as far as a semi youngest squad in the World Cup with expectations what so ever , next tournament we will be over hyped and fail under the pressure same cycle over the last 40 years of watching them lol
Oh and if you don’t get “ it’s coming home” as English humor and optimism and mistake it for arrogance then you have got it all wrong I’m afraid
Im almost certain the 'its coming home' thing was a bit of a joke for most England fans. It was more of a satirical joke because our chances or winning the World Cup were minute, and fortunately we kept going and it had a snowball effect.
Some people over did it, and I know there were certainly the 'classic' England fans who got carried away and embarrassed us.
As for the tournament performance, I hate to say it, but I don't think we can take a lot from it. We kept 1 clean sheet throughout, we barely scored from open play, we didn't look penetrative in attack. I really don't think the defending was as great, look at the goals we conceded. Panama, Colombia, Belgium & both of Croatia's goals all could've been avoided with better defending.
I don't think this is negative, and it will be really helpful for the younger players to experience going this far. However, I don't think the tournament performance asserts any sort of dominance

i think everyone knew it was a joke, with that said though, if you are prepared to give it, better get rdy to take some light ribbing back. The its coming home joke is going to go on for ages now. like u said tho, just jokes.

A light ribbing? Have you seen what people have been saying? They're genuinely seething, who knew a song could make people so angry.
Wales made the semi finals of the euros 2 years ago and there was 1% of the media coverage that england got. Granted the euros are not the world cup but could you (english) say it would be the same if yous had done that 2 years ago? I think not. Was nothing to do with the team or the majority of the undeluded fans getting excited. It was the media pundits commentators coming across as arrogant. And the coming home nonsense was the cherry on top for the rest of the world thinking you were all arrogant (which you arent i know) but you can see why other nations would think that

I am a scot and have Zero problem with england fans, players and media getting excited the further your team progressed. My only problem is when im watching another game ie france v belgium and so on, i wish commentators would commentate on that game without feeling the need to reference england every 5 minutes..
Posted on another thread. Even the players are sick of the English attitude.
"English journalists, pundits from television, they underestimated Croatia and that was a huge mistake," Real Madrid's Modric told ITV. "They should be more humble and respect more opponents.
"All these words from them we take, we were reading and we were saying, 'OK, today we will see who will be tired'."
bit late as I was just scrolling through, but compared to the Croatian media ours were saints. They were bragging about beating us before the match was even played
Such a bizarre thing with England, if any other country celebrates winning a few games it is fine but as soon as we are happy at winning a few world cup games, we get slated as arrogant.
Modric is living in a fantasy world clearly, all our pundits have been saying he is the best CM in the world, even before we were drawn against them.
I live in England, I'm not English, I'm pretty impartial by and large.
The English media started acting like you'd gotten to the final the second you lost to Belgium and got the "easy route."
I'm not suggesting all English people believed it but its definitely what the press were writing and that's all Modric has said. He basically implied they used it for motivation which isn't uncommon in sport. If I were Southgate, I'd have been using the Swedish press as motivation before that game because they really tore in to England.
Nobody has ever said the English can't celebrate a win, just that you have a habit of going vastly overboard and usually a bit too soon. Weeks of everyone screaming IT'S COMING HOME OMG before you'd even got to a final were evidence of that.
At least this time I think the sentiment is proud enough that hopefully you won't be booing your own players and singing You Let Your Country Down quite so much, persecuting your own young professionals due to your own unrealistic expectations. That should be progress.
Its a clear joke based on previous tweets & its the sports bible, they are not even a huge media outlet so don't go saying "English media" as if the sports bible speaks for everyone.
Also its in referral to the tweets that last time England won the WC
1966 Real Madrid win Euro Cup
Man City Win League
Burnley win Euro place
Chelsea finish 5th in league
England Win World Cup
And thats why its a joke and the sports bible have come up with another one.

It really won’t.
Southgate and Martinez have probably already spoke and agreed to play the players that havent had any game time yet.
