Don’t get me wrong, I think England had a decent tournament but based on the opposition they faced and their road to the final, it has to be classed as another failure.
1. Germany knocked out by South Korea
2. Spain knocked out by Russia
3. Italy didn’t even qualify
4. Netherlands didn’t even qualify
5. England knocked out by Croatia
We’ve failed but does it mean we’re better than these lot? If it does, then I’ll take it.
Spain WC winners in 2010
Germany WC winners in 2014
But you'll take the easiest run to the semi's and a probable 4th place finish. Nice
This is so illogical. If you’re going to include 2010 in any argument you may as well throw 66 in there!

England WC winners in 66. What makes 50 years different to 4 or 8? Both of those sides were better than this England but they arent now so what the hell has that got to do with it? Spain have only won 1 WC and could very well struggle to do so again just like England have. Nature of football.
What I referenced was modern football, come the next euros Spain and Germany will be amongst the favorites and England will be around 6-10th. And I didn't include Italy in 06
But if you ask any fan if they take a World Cup win in 2018 and get knocked out the group stage in the next two I know what they would say.
So no England aren't better than those lot
I’m not saying they are I’m just saying your reference point makes no sense whatsoever.
My point is that in modern football Spain and Germany are still better.
Looking back at your post I did think you were saying you thought England were better maybe not on second read though.
Mixed bag this wc for England I think. Happy to reach a wc semi but they haven't faced any big team and when they did they couldn't get a result
The way England celebrated after beating Colombia (without James!) by the skin of their teeth was pretty crummy. Imo Colombia would’ve beaten them with a game changer like James, which they desperately lacked that game. Argentina’s losses don’t look so bad all of a sudden, considering they lost to the two finalists lol
We celebrated winning a game? God forbid, how dare we.
Surely you can see the difference between celebrating with class and celebrating like you won the tournament with several games to play despite beating a team you were already favored to beat even before they lost their star player.
This guy is spot on. And this is why nearly every country hates England and their fans. England fans deliberately try and antagonise people and display a self entitlement. Again look at the way Wales fans conducted themselves in the Euros for a good example of how to be behave and be liked by the footballing world.

I think when the dust settles we’ll be happy to have made a semi but also need to recognise that quality of play wise we have only made small gains on Euro 16 and there’s a lot more work to do.
Spain and Germany certainly are better than us. As are Belgium, France, Brazil etc...
What I know for sure though is this. There has been no arrogance, no unwavering belief we will win the World Cup. That’s been invented by people who were desperate for England to fail. All we did was enjoy a semi decent run in a tournament for the first time in 22 years and frankly it’d be really weird if we didn’t.
Don’t get me wrong, I think England had a decent tournament but based on the opposition they faced and their road to the final, it has to be classed as another failure.
Not really a failure. They beat the teams they were meant to and even progressed past one they shouldn't have in Colombia. Pass mark
team had no expectations and made the semis losing in ET.
im not an england cheerleader, but the sheer gloating against them for finally performing in a tournament, with arguably the least hyped team in like two generations, is quite odd

Least hype they have received before a tournament I agree...but soon as they beat two pub sides and saw how easy their route to the final was going to be, they went into hype overdrive with their usual arrogant bs and ramming it’s coming home down people’s throats!

a silly chant ‘its coming home’ isnt over-the-top and banter is banter
many fans got excited over a potential WC final run - arrest the entire lot.
'Its coming home' was a meme to be honest. It kind of built up momentum as the tournment progressed but it wasn't really serious. But of course the people who love to bash England will take it literally now that we are out.
Also, this thread is titled 'overhyped bottlejobs. I think this has been the least hyped up England team in 30 years, no one going into this tournament had any hope of doing even remotely well.
As for bottlejobs, we made the Semi Final with the youngest squad we've ever taken to a WC. Fantastic effort IMO.

Columbia kicked and snarled and cheated their way through the entire game. To be honest, I’d have rubbed it in their faces even more. It took over four minutes between the award of the penalty and the taking of it, because of Columbia’s antics.
Don’t get me wrong, I think England had a decent tournament but based on the opposition they faced and their road to the final, it has to be classed as another failure.
Brasil drew to Sweden.
Germany lost to S Korea.
Spain lost to Russia.
Germany lost to Mexico.
Croatia beat Argentina 3-0.
No such thing as an easy game. Only easy on paper.
They made it worse for themselves with all the it’s coming home nonsense in full over dramatic flow. Fans got way too arrogant and cocky as usual. I’m more annoyed that I spelt Colombia wrong
Oh my word! It wasn’t arrogance it was a laugh stemming from a song from 96. So you guys take everything literally?
Perfect cockyness at it's purest form.
Tonight it was Karma night.
Tonight was us being beaten by a team that played better. No karma involved.
We’ve had some fun with the coming home thing but seriously, that’s all it was. I guarantee you probably less than 1% of the country actually thought we’d win the whole thing.
'Some fun' ?
Man in the last week all you could watch, read, or listen to from english people was 'it's coming home' and stuff.
And you lost to a better team, not a team that played better.
A better team.
Still if you keep it together and low key, you have some players that can make the difference in the coming Int.Comps.
I only felt sorry for Kane, he was the only one serious among your team.
Hum - not a better team. Player for player England should have won. Croatia have 3 or maybe 4 better players - who are VERY good, but the rest are on par or worse.
Croatia played better - to be honest I dont actually know what we were doing. It wasnt (for the most part) the same as we have been. What was the constant playing back to the GK, then booting it upfield looking for a wingback or Sterling. Where was the playing it out.
Croatia pushed up high - something we hadnt faced - forcing the fullback into a 5 - meaning the GK was long punting to the dwarf sterling. OK they were trying to exploit his pace and the space behind - but it worked once or twice - but we kept going.
WE got as far was we have with set pieces, we were actually really poor from open play - and if you dont have the ball high up you cant hurt a team with set pieces.
Either way, its a lesson learned, from a young team that will only grow, and be added to by WC youth winners from more than one tournament. Its the start of their generation - and hopefully not the end. Yes they had a kind run - but you an only beat the team you face. Im confident with this bunch plus additions coming though we can repeat a semi even if we DO face "better" opposition.
Whos winning git now - I actually think Croatia will. They have a steely determination France dont have, and some top quality in the midfield. Mbappe needs to be on his game, as I think hes the only player that can really hurt them (the odd set piece aside) - but well see.
I hope they do win - if England cant I always like to see a country whos never won it before win. I routed for Span when they did, and France back in 98 when they did for that reason - and Ill be routing for Croatia for that same reason.
Im almost certain the 'its coming home' thing was a bit of a joke for most England fans. It was more of a satirical joke because our chances or winning the World Cup were minute, and fortunately we kept going and it had a snowball effect.
Some people over did it, and I know there were certainly the 'classic' England fans who got carried away and embarrassed us.
As for the tournament performance, I hate to say it, but I don't think we can take a lot from it. We kept 1 clean sheet throughout, we barely scored from open play, we didn't look penetrative in attack. I really don't think the defending was as great, look at the goals we conceded. Panama, Colombia, Belgium & both of Croatia's goals all could've been avoided with better defending.
I don't think this is negative, and it will be really helpful for the younger players to experience going this far. However, I don't think the tournament performance asserts any sort of dominance
The Conclusion is , no-one expected much from this England Team, & they got further than thought.
Good Formation change, but we got found out as soon as we met a half decent team.
So we move on.
The English fans who went over the top dont really understand football that well.
English have to admitt they acted cocky and people who bash them have to admitt that was a good run for England after so many years.
Also, I insist Croatia was the better team, not just played better.
Apart from world class players ( Modric, Perisic, Rakitic, Vrsajlko, Mandjukic are established players too vs England's only Kane and Rose who was not even in the starting lineup, the rest of the English players are still 'talents') they had a plan and were hard to defend against when the ball was on the ground.

Exactly.
‘It’s coming home’ was rubbed in every face of every footballing fan across the planet. The sheer arrogance became sheer agony and it’s absolutely delightful. A more level headed approach next time? Nah, it’ll be the same from a nation build on arrogance.
I also love that ‘it’s coming home’ was now banter and a joke that they’ve been sent packing.
You couldn’t make it up. Tails between legs and back to work.

You can say it all you like but if you lived it you’d understand it was in jest.
Of course there are those that took things too far and that’s really disappointing but not a reflection on the population as a whole.
As for tails between our legs - you won’t find any of that. People are happy for once that we weren’t a complete shambles! We beat who we should and lost to a team who on the day were just so much better than us. There’s no shame in losing to Croatia, they’ve got some real talent.
