I'm pretty sure you also got something like 10k and a few lesser packs if you made it to the semifinal/final and lost. This year, if you make it all the way to the final and lose, you get your 500 coins from the match and 1-player pack.
Unless you're winning 90%+ of your matches, you actually get better rewards from playing 3 (and hopefully advancing out of the group), collecting your 5-player pack, then forfeiting the tourney and starting over. You get 8 players over 3 matches.

True. Absolutely stupid. In fact, you only need to win the first two games, disconnect from the third and you'll probably still advance to the knock-out phase and get the 1500 coins and premium pack. And then start over.
Man, I would really like to talk to guy at EA who comes up with that sort of stuff.
