So Bad At This Game

Hey guys,
I don't know what it is about this FIFA but I'm genuinely terrible. I've always been pretty decent at all of the other FIFA games that I've played but there's just something about this FIFA that I can't handle.

No matter what I do I can't seem to create chances, players never move into space and my passes are always underhit or go to the wrong players, and before my player even gets the ball my opponents players are all over it and have already got a tackle in. When I do eventually create some scoring chances their keeper always seems to turn into a god and becomes unstoppable, now I know they made the keepers better with the patch because let's be honest before the patch they were awful.

I can't defend properly either, there are always massive gaps in my defense no matter if I control them or not so my opponents always have tons of space. And when I'm defending my players get turned so easily and never recover in time, all's it takes is someone to zig zag a bit and they're away and it seems like everytime I do get a tackle in it manages to rebound back to their player.

Sorry if this seems like this is another moaning/b******* thread guys it's not intended to be, just honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong that's causing me to be so bad at the game. I've spent money on the game and a fair amount on FIFA points at the start aswell so I don't just wanna give up that easily, afterall it's one of my favourite game series and it's honestly frustrating me that I'm so bad.

Anyone else having similar problems or have any solutions

Cheers

Maybe take advantage of the new FUT Champions channel and watch and learn from top players?

I'll have a look at that now pal. I've watched stuff on youtube and all that but the pro's make it look effortless and I can't get anywhere near replicating what they're doing!

I mainly play the AI at the moment and have started playing more possession football and noticed it has been improving my awareness and defending as well. Pace is still very effective but it isnt the be all and end all this year so find which play style you think suits you and work on it, for example ive been using Immobile up top in a 4321 and his finishing has been lethal. Let the players around him open the space up, slot him the ball and he puts it away. I would never have played like that last year as the only really valid option for gameplay was fast paced and non stop.

Stick with it and try a few new formations or players and just stick to offline for a bit. Once youve found your style, take it online and see how you go.

The one thing I noticed watching one match on Champions Channel this weekend was the dribbling... the top players know something about dribbling in space that I apparently do not.

Granted they had the top players in the game but with Messi, Ronaldo, etc... they were moving through tight spaces and not losing possession of the ball. I have heard mention of LB + LS as a way of "close dribbling" but haven't tried mastering it or playing with it yet.

LB and RB together. Though it's nerfed a bit this year. RB alone also helps for feint, drag back etc. Takes practice but it's worthwhile. Also most people sprint too much which will lose you the ball nearly every time.

I find the practice arena not that useful. Just play AI on the lowest difficulties and practice drag backs, scoop and cruyff turns, crab walk etc. Takes time but I'm getting better at it, you have to really drill it in so you're no longer thinking about what buttons it needs

LB is for close dribbling, slower speed but way more touches per turn

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Took into account the slower dribbling and not sprinting everywhere which seemed to help a bit!
Still can't defend mind you but at least I qualified for the WL (not that I have any intention of actually playing it.

If your qualifying for the wl then you're doing ok.
  • I had the same problem with my defence...then I realised no ❤️❤️❤️❤️ it was mangala and reid...now it's benatia and kaloubaly or however it's spelt haha, and now I look like a savage defender. Im not, I'm ❤️❤️❤️❤️ but they make it easy.

Could have just been a lucky run, 4 times out of 6 attempts in the past 2 days I've been knocked out in the 1st round

I am lucky if I make it to semi final.
  • Do you charge up your standing tackles? Really helps make interceptions and tackle runners. Just hold it down and use power up bar like you do with shots..

Are you having issues in DKTS only? I played one for the first time last night, and man it felt like completely different gameplay with the input delay for me. Totally was not expecting it to be that bad, way worse than in 17' at any point. Hoping it was a fluke. Unplayable in that state, I felt everything you described in the OP.

Yeah I do, probably too much to be fair! It just seems that whenever I tackle the ball still gets past my player even though my player and his foot is clearly blocking it off.

Nah bud, I mainly play that just because I've always found the servers to be the best for me there but I play seasons and friendly seasons too and it's pretty much the same. Occasionally I'll have a game where everything is going my way and my opponent is having the same trouble as me then the next game I go back to being awful :D

ahh I see. like I said though that was my first time playing a dkt since release and it was not a good experience. The other player seemed to be having the same issues. we both couldn't get any passes going or create chances, it was an ugly ugly match. basically because we were both so delayed. Maybe it was just that game, at least im really hoping so. he might have been on the other side of the world lol. .

@MrRaptorTurtle not that im really the best one to give advise or anything, just thought i would chime in. i struggled for a while with the new dribbling myself, that was the biggest issue so far. But starting to get use to it. I found myself using the Lb way too much when dribbling, and also for my passes, used to it from last year. You really don't want every player making a run each pass lololol.

I find using the Lb most useful when receiving a pass, i click on it right as they receive the ball and make one quick turn into space around the defender and then let off Lb and look for the pass or keep dribbling with just the left analog.

It's cool man, any help is good help! :)
Yeah I started doing that earlier to some success, guess it's gonna take a while to get used to everything but it's just not too fun for me atm.

@MrRaptorTurtle - few bits from me that might help?

I am average, but today I was finding Professional on squad battles 'easyish'.
I won all 4 games by at least 2 goals and in two of those I was going through motions second half.
Online, at the moment, it is very weird for me. One game I get paired against someone of similar level or less able, then next I am playing someone much more advanced with a club 4+ years old with the likes of maradonna and ronaldo in their team.

l think this year they have built the game so that it is not merely just about having the fastest players.
Guys like Gylfi, Morgan S and Fellaini are genuinely decent to use and cause problems despite their pace being lowish/low.

Build up play seems to be the focus with skilling definitely better than last year, but last year, lets face it, skilling was almost pointless.

    Things I have noticed most;

1 - Sometimes playing sideways and backwards really really matters. It feels to me like more channels and gaps open up for killer passes, crosses and through balls after a lot of short and quick passes, but dont just tap pass constantly, use those skills, take it for a walk, then pick your pass.

2 - I am finding shooting a mixed bag, but its better than last year at the moment.

3 - traits defo matter this year.

4 - tactics are important. Depending on who you use, 'get in behind' might not be the best option for your best striker. I usually startt on attack, then change back after going a goal up. If it feels really easy, I go all out and get the score high, then go back to neutral . Choose your players wisely, for example, Ntep was far more effective for me in my team than Martial, and a certain discard brazilian is playing for me like an absolute legend.

5 - I am still getting my own head around the sliders, but these are also very important.

6 - cdms - if you use them, need the right instruction depending on who is around them . I had a nightmare with Bakayoko, then found the balance. Right now I am using Seri and Tolisso at cdms and they have their instructions set so that Bailly can get up the pitch.

Before I used to play in Semi-Pro and Professional. Semi-Pro was too easy and Professional was too hard. Then today after watching a videos I decided to play on Legendary. Lost most of my games but I did eventually win a game 3-1. The key is just be extremely patient with the ball, and make consistent passes with players who are open and you know will get the ball. And LB always helps when attacking. I still need to do a lot better, especially when it comes to defending and I don’t do any skill moves so I’m still learning that. Still a start though.
