Yes I know it's very very early but without any major International competition, this award will probably be decided based on how this season ends.
The reason I'm starting this thread now is because Ronaldo seems to be the front runner for the award once again and I just have to ask why?
No denying that he had an amazing 3 games against Bayern and Atletico, out of this world even, but it seems like this will be the only thing that might get him the win. Let's say he scores again in the final and RM wins, that's 4 games out of a pretty average year for him. He's nowhere near the top scorers or goal contributions in Europe, behind Messi, Suarez, Lewa and even Bas Dost, and while he's been influential in those 3 (or maybe 4 games) can people who watch Real Madrid can honestly say he's their best player in 2017, let alone the world's best player?
This isn't even about Messi vs Ronaldo, if anyone from Real Madrid wins it should be someone who's been their best player in 2017, so probably Modric or Marcelo.
And if it's just about numbers, well, you know...

Dont forget it has never been done and Ronaldo would've played a major part in it.
Could both go wrong tho and yeah as you said, right now he doesnt really deserves it when you take all into account and not just the last few weeks/months.
The only reason I'm talking about it now is because he already seems to be the favorite despite his numbers being much lower than previous years. It just seems like it's based more on past history than current ability. Obviously if he starts scoring like before and by the end of the year his numbers are closer to Messi's then he should win but at this particular moment he shouldn't be a favorite and the fact that no-one else from RM is mentioned is ridiculous.
I'm sure that even if Juve wins it wouldn't really change anything
This isn't what this thread is about. I'm not even saying Messi should win.
Let's try and keep this debate serious please
You actually think leicester would have won the title without him or chelsea would be about to?
Real, barca, bayern etc would all have the same with or without said players, im not convinced chelsea would.
Chelsea won the title with ease in 2015 with 6 of the same players in their lineup (7 if you count Cesc who's also having a decent season). Let's not overestimate Kante's importance to this title.
For now Messi has 11 but 2 penalties, while Ronaldo has 10. If Ronaldo scores in the final surely he will win the award.
Does he have more titles this season than Marcelo?
Its time a defender wins it again
Ramos imo
Kante
How did Chelsea do last season tho? Also how did Leicester do the season before Kante joined? Do you think it's just a coincidence that both clubs jumped to the top while he was part of their team?
- CL finalist
- Most likely La Liga Winner
- And will have the opportunity to play confederations cup
He obviously helped both teams but it's not like Leicester would've won the title again if he was still playing there. You also can't ignore the fact that Chelsea won the title 2 years ago and last season was probably just an off season, caused by a lot of players being out of form. Kante isn't more important than a change of manager and a complete change of playstyle.
You can say the same about Kroos, Pepe and even Coentrao.
It's basically Ronaldo vs Messi and the winner is decided on whoever had the better season. A 3rd contender has to win World Cup, CL and league title to beat those 2 oh and possibly score 40+ goals.
But I think Buffon has a chance of winning it if he wins the Champions League. The treble + so many people respecting him due to his amazing career and longevity, can see it happen
Yes
Ronaldo has not had a very good season really.
