5 yard pass, changing player, scripting?

Can someone tell me why so many times one of my/your players will put a ❤️❤️❤️❤️ pass in from 5 yards and why you get a delay in changing player? its like the game is scripted and the AI in the game does a total balls up on purpose?? Is this what people mean by scripting?

You pass the ball and look towards the player you intend to receive it only to watch the ball trickle to an opponent and your furiously trying to get the cursor on a defender
