I'm not sure the current Chelsea regime/Todd Boehly deserves much flak for the potential spend this summer. Clearly, he's intent on bridging the gap between City and Liverpool and is willing to invest to get there. They're not quite starting from scratch, but due to how poor their investment and contract management has been in recent years, they are a long way away from having anything resembling a comparable squad.

The people that signed off on the likes of Werner, Havertz, Ziyech, Lukaku are all gone. If you look, objectively, deal to deal, sure they may have overpaid here and there for some, but the players they've brought in, and are linked with, are largely top notch imo.

Sterling - 45m, can't really argue about that. I have questions about his finishing and consistency, but he's an upgrade on everything Chelsea had before.

Koulibaly - 38m, a great deal for a leader who likely has several years left in the tank.

Cucurella - 63m, absurd price but going to be a key player there for the next 10 years. Pep wanted him so badly that there wasn't really an alternative once we missed out. About as big an endorsement as you can get.

Rumours of De Jong (worth whatever the fee), Auba (mad paying that much six months after he was free, but worked with Tuchel before and has something to prove), Fofana (another 10-year plus player if signed), Gordon (same again). It's hard to question any of it.

Boehly is having to correct the mistakes of the previous regime. Not sure I agree they immediately have to challenge for the title. Bridging the gap to this City/Liverpool is a much different prospect to catching the Arsenal/United of old, because City and Liverpool are doing things no other Premier League team has done before. To be so consistently excellent, putting up 90+ point seasons like it's nothing - that's the bar now.

When I look at our squad, just roughly, if we were to try and buy these players now at value, I'd say that would run around a 1.1 to 1.2 billion pounds. Liverpool around the same, if not a bit more. That's where they have to go to. Having 14, 15, 16 truly elite players, and a handful of really, really good players that can fill in.

Not sure why I'm defending Chelsea... But I do see why they're doing what they're doing now. If they want to get back to truly competing, this is what they need to do.

It's Tuchel's first season being able to sign his own players, and most of the squad will be replaced. It will cost money.

Plus we have to overpay to sign some players because our main targets were stolen and they were cheaper.

I'm not sure how you could argue that their squad shouldn't be up there competing at the same level as City and Liverpool if they got them all.

First 11 (433 for ease of comparison):

    Alisson - Ederson - Mendy

    Robertson - Cancelo - Chilwell
    VVD - Dias - Koulibaly
    Matip - Laporte - T.Silva
    TAA - Walker - James

    Fabinho - Rodri - Kante
    Thiago - KDB - FDJ
    Keita - B.Silva - Kovacic

    Nunez - Haaland - Aubameyang
    Diaz - Foden - Sterling
    Salah - Mahrez - Havertz

    Extras:

    Kelleher - Ortega - Kepa

    Tsimikas - Moreno - Cucurella
    Konate - Stones - Fofana
    Gomez - Ake - Azpilicueta
    Phillips - N/A - Chabolah
    Ramsey - N/A - CHO

    Henderson - Phillips - Jorginho
    Elliott - Grealish - Gallagher
    Jones - Gundogan - RLC
    Milner - Foden - Gilmour
    Carvalho - Palmer - Barkley
    Oxlade-Chamberlain - N/A - N/A

    Jota - Alvarez - Pulisic
    Firmino - N/A - Ziyech
    N/A - N/A - Broja

I may have made mistakes, it was tougher to do than I anticipated, but yeah.

Major diff is that Liverpool and City attack is built from scratch by Klopp and Pep respectively; Tuchel hasn't had the opportunity to do this with Chelsea so far for a variety of reasons (ownership change, high value players signed by prev managers, lack of good strikers avail in the market) It will still take till next year to become competitive with Liv and City

Looking at the main XIs, none of the Chelsea front three there is a starter on City or Liverpool. Arguably not in even first reserve. So, even with this investment, which would bring their defense and midfield (still questionable on this) up to standard, they'd still need another window to bolster their front line.

Plus the fact the City and Liverpool squads are largely settled, whereas Tuchel will be bedding in multiple new starting players... They'll be learning throughout the season. Whereas City and Liverpool will be relentless juggernauts they've proven to be. No time to learn on the job, really, with these two teams around. Which is why I see it being another year, at least, until they can truly compete.

Pulisic has been terrible and we would probably sell him. Also has hamstrings made of spaghetti.
    Kante is injury prone now
Chilwell clearly needs more time because of Injury he had, might not even come back the same player.
    Auba is a stop gap.
CHO will probably go out on loan, his injury killed him.
    Azpi is showing his age.
Havertz really needs to improve this season.
Gilmour and Barkley? I'll be surprised if they even play or be in the squad.

@Mike_Pickford is spot on regarding the criticism towards Boehly.

Gary Neville’s football manager comments last week were particularly thick. He’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. If we weren’t overhauling the squad, he’d be hung out to dry for not backing Tuchel.

As a fan, all you can hope for is a show of ambition, and he’s been 100% on it so far.

It's a complete joke, this whole incident has been more controversial with VAR than if VAR didn't exist. Because obviously a referee will miss the odd incident, but with VAR it's just a joke.

You can only laugh. There is now video replays to help ensure they get easy decisions like this correct.

They didn’t, and now they’re apologising for it four days later. That’s cost us two points and Tuchel’s been banned for calling it out.

Utterly embarrassing and they deserve every ounce of criticism they’ll receive this season until standards improve.

Technically your poor defending on the corner after cost you two points..

But if the correct decision was called, the ball would have been booted down the opposite end of the pitch from our free kick.

And maybe Spurs score like against Ajax in the semi final when they had a long kick that we scored seconds later. You can’t predict how a game ends after a call.

The call was wrong. But also your defending was dreadful and deserves to be called out just as much. Tuchel would rather blame the refs than his own players mistakes for both goals.

Our defending was poor, but of course nobody is going to focus on that when it shouldn’t have even come into question anyway. The fact is that if the officials do their job correctly, and call a very easy decision, then the result changes.

Managers get sacked, players are heckled, yet referees seem to have this shield where criticising them publicly is taboo. It always falls back onto the other people involved.

They’ve been affecting big results for years now and they consistently get it wrong. Coming out for days later and apologising isn’t good enough.

I agree there needs to be more punishment for refs but they certainly get it from fans. Taylor and his family received death threats this week. All Tuchel did was make it worse and give fans more fire to attack Taylor which is completely wrong.

Managers should be able to file their complaints, have a 48 hour review and refs be suspended/demoted based on the decisions. If the FA was more open about the process, it would help everyone. Same with VAR and letting us listen to the decision.

As for publicly calling them out. That’s pointless imo. Managers are heated after a game and have not had time to review things. Half the time they are wrong and would just bring attention to the refs on the wrong things. Perfect example was Tuchel saying Richarlison was offside for that first goal. Then the Athletic posts pictures showing he wasn’t but since Tuchel said it, that’s other call fans blame Taylor for.
